MODEC signs FEED contract with Samsung E&A to use Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology

Japanese Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) specialist MODEC has awarded a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract to South Korea’s Samsung E&A for an onboard carbon capture system design. This will use UK-based Carbon Clean’s modular CycloneCC technology in what will be the first deployment of post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) technology on an FPSO unit.

Under the pilot project, a modular carbon capture system will be installed on a MODEC FPSO using Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology, which has a 50% smaller footprint than conventional offshore solutions. The basis of the CycloneCC system is the rotating packed bed (RPD) technology that improves carbon capture efficiency under the difficult operating conditions of offshore vessels.

Carbon Clean will provide FEED support, which includes the process design package (PDP) licensing and equipment supply, while Samsung E&A will lead the detailed engineering effort to optimise the technology for the challenges posed by the offshore environment.

Koichi Matsumiya, Chief Technical Officer at MODEC, commented: ‘This project aligns with our long-term Vision 2034 decarbonisation strategy, and we believe that CycloneCC will play a key role in achieving our targets. We aim to accelerate the readiness of this technology for offshore deployment, leveraging our experience in floating production systems.’

Carbon Clean CEO, Aniruddha Sharma, said: ‘Offshore oil and gas operations must embrace carbon capture to meet sustainability targets. CycloneCC’s compact and scalable design makes it a game-changer, allowing widespread adoption at a fraction of the cost of traditional amine-based systems.’

If the pilot project proves successful, MODEC has announced plans to scale-up the deployment of CycloneCC across its FPSO fleet. The project will serve as a blueprint for integrating carbon capture solutions into offshore production assets, supporting the industry’s broader emissions reduction goals while protecting energy security.
