ClassNK launches notation for verified shipbuilding emissions

Japanese classification society ClassNK has introduced a ‘world first’ classification notation for ship-construction Scope 3 emissions.

The notation, known as a-EA (CFP), confirms that the carbon footprint associated with a vessel’s construction has been calculated and independently verified by ClassNK. The framework has been incorporated into the latest edition of the society’s Environmental Guidelines.

The initiative is aimed at emissions generated during the shipbuilding process, which for shipowners are reported under Scope 3 Category 2, covering capital goods.

To date, emissions from vessel construction are often estimated using standard emission factors or default values because detailed information on construction processes and materials is not always available.

As a result, emissions calculations may not fully reflect measures such as the use of lower-carbon materials or efforts by shipyards to reduce emissions during construction.

Under the new framework, shipyards can demonstrate that the carbon footprint of a vessel’s construction has been calculated and subjected to third-party verification. ClassNK said this could help yards demonstrate emissions-reduction measures undertaken during the construction process.

The notation provides shipowners and cargo owners access to verified emissions data based on actual shipbuilding activities rather than standard emission factors or default values. ClassNK said the information could support more accurate Scope 3 disclosures.

ClassNK said the notation confirms that a vessel’s construction-related carbon footprint has been calculated and independently verified. It added that it would continue developing standards and certification services to support environmental initiatives across the shipping industry.
