Shipbroking and advisory group Braemar has joined the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), becoming the latest participant in the Commercial Pathways to Transition workstream.

Braemar said it would contribute market intelligence and expertise in chartering, risk management and fuel transition. It recently launched its Shipping Carbon Intelligence tool, which provides vessel-level emissions and regulatory exposure data intended to support commercial decision-making by shipowners, charterers and financiers.

Braemar operates across sale and purchase, tanker, dry cargo, gas and offshore markets, serving shipowners, charterers, banks and investors.

Joey Ng, Global Head of Decarbonisation and Fuel Transition at Braemar, said: ‘The decision to transition to alternative fuels or not remains a key risk for our clients. The ability to navigate this complex issue is becoming a competitive advantage.

‘The Sustainable Shipping Initiative’s goal to support this transition by taking a pragmatic commercial view aligns with our beliefs that a successful transition for any shipping company is supported by evidenced-based decision making. We’re committed to facilitating climate smart shipping, and membership of the collective will enable us to share our expertise in chartering and risk management and support our long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.’

SSI was founded in 2010 as a multi-stakeholder initiative focused on accelerating shipping’s decarbonisation. Its Commercial Pathways to Transition workstream focuses on the commercial and financial factors influencing decarbonisation decisions across the maritime value chain.

Ellie Besley-Gould, SSI’s CEO, said: ‘Brokers sit at the heart of how shipping deals get done.’ She added that Braemar’s membership would bring ‘expert market intelligence’ into the organisation’s work and signalled that ‘the commercial intermediary community is increasingly ready to move from analysis to action.’

Braemar said its participation in SSI would support its wider decarbonisation activities, including the provision of market intelligence and advisory services related to fuel-transition and carbon-regulation decisions.
