Two Japanese companies, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and The Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to undertake a joint study on the shipping of liquefied hydrogen.
The agreement between an electric utility and major shipping company, which aims to develop a supply chain for low-carbon hydrogen, is a first for Japan. In studying the maritime transport of liquefied hydrogen, both companies will undertake a comprehensive analysis of necessary vessel specifications and regulatory compliance requirements.
In their collaboration, MOL and KEPCO will conduct a review of ship specifications, operational protocols and safety procedures. Particular attention will be given to ensuring the safety of vessels and their crew, which is essential due to the unique characteristics of liquefied hydrogen during transportation.
In their press release announcing the MoU, the two companies stated the broader aims of the study are to “study the specifics of marine transport of liquefied hydrogen and work toward the establishment of a hydrogen supply chain and the realization of a zero-carbon society.”
