Shell & STAX partner to capture tanker emissions at Port of LA

Shell Oil Products US (Equilon Enterprises) has signed a five-year partnership with maritime emissions capture firm STAX Engineering for emissions capture and control for tankers at the Port of Los Angeles.

STAX Engineering has secured an ‘industry first’ five-year deal for emissions capture and control for tankers within the Port of Los Angeles. Starting in 2025, STAX will begin implementing emissions capture services at Shell’s Mormon Island Terminal at the Port of Los Angeles. This will coincide with the new California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions regulations for tanker vessels.

According to STAX, this agreement will make the engineering firm the first and only emissions control provider to service tanker vessels in California.

The emissions capture and control solution is presented as an alternative to shore power for tanker emissions reduction. The company has now secured exclusive service agreements at major California ports, including Los Angeles, Long Beah, Hueneme, Benicia, Richmond and Oakland.

In addition to Shell, STAX has partnered with other international shipping companies, such as NYK Line and Hyundai GLOVIS.

Mike Walker, STAX CEO, said: ‘Our continued growth and industry-leading ability to service tankers reflect the strong demand from our partners to reduce emissions efficiently and underscore our position as far and away front runners in the space.’

‘We are proud to extend our cutting-edge emissions capture and control services to the Mormon Island Terminal. This agreement is a significant milestone in our mission to provide affordable and accessible solutions to port communities, helping them achieve their environmental goals without disrupting operations. As we expand our presence in California, we look forward to bringing our technology to ports across North America and beyond.’
