Yinson Production’s world-first FPSO with post-combustion carbon capture system departs for Angola

Yinson Production’s latest floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), the Agogo FPSO, is the first of its kind to incorporate a post-combustion carbon capture pilot system. The FPSO is currently en route to Angola from COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s shipyard in Shanghai, China. It is scheduled to begin production in September 2025 as part of Azule Energy’s Agogo Integrated West Hub Development Project.

The FPSO is expected to play an important role in maximising reserves in Block 15/06, a conventional deepwater oil development in Angola. It adds to the existing FPSOs in the Agogo field, which is estimated to contain one billion barrels of recoverable reserves.

The Agogo FPSO’s features a post-combustion carbon capture system that will capture CO2 emissions from onboard gas turbines. According to Yinson, this will prevent an estimated 230,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This represents a 27% reduction in the output of carbon emissions, marking a significant step towards minimising the emissions generated by deepwater energy production operations.

Once operational, the Agogo FPSO will have the capacity to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day and store 1.6 million barrels. Located 180 km offshore Angola, in water depths of approx. 1,650m, the vessel will be a core component of Azule Energy’s plans to increase production efficiency while meeting sustainability targets.

Yinson noted that the conversion of the 2009-built VLCC tanker into a high-spec offshore production unit was completed ahead of schedule, taking a total of 24 months. This timeframe included seven months of integration work and testing at COSCO’s Shanghai shipyard.

The Agogo FPSO follows a $5.7 billion contract awarded to Malaysia-based Yinson Production in February 2023 by Azule Energy, a joint venture between BP and Eni. This contract secures a 15-year firm charter with an option to extend for an additional five years.

At the vessel’s naming ceremony in Shanghai on 20 February 2025, Yinson Production’s CEO, Flemming Grønnegaard, commented: ‘We are thrilled to celebrate this key milestone with our client and all partners involved in this project. Featuring a full suite of technologies to reduce carbon emissions, including carbon capture technology, the Agogo FPSO is a true game-changer in the industry and underscores our commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of our operations.’
