The Rotterdam Energy Transition Fund (‘ETF-R’) has committed €2 million to accelerate the implementation of carbon capture technology operations at the Port of Rotterdam.
The investment will expand the development of the Value Hub in Rotterdam, which manages the offloading of CO2 from ships to ensure efficient and sustainable processing. The technology, produced by Value Maritime, captures and stores CO2 emitted by vessels and enables this to be transported for reuse or sequestration.
Value Maritime is the developer and installer of the Filtree system, one of the first commercially viable hybrid CO2 capture and exhaust cleaning systems on the market. In addition to CO2 capture and storage, the Filtree system cleans sulphur and ultra-fine particulate matter, as well as oil residue and particulate matter from vessels’ washing water.
It has an integrated carbon capture feature that enables ships to store CO2 collected while at sea in fixed tanks or non-fixed battery containers. Onboard storage units can then be sustainably offloaded in port for reuse or further storage, managed by Value Maritime’s sister company, Value Carbon.
The Value Group consists of Value Maritime and Value Carbon. While Value Maritime captures and stores CO2 emissions produced by ships during transit, Value Carbon focuses on land-based carbon management, such as when captured CO2 is offloaded for reuse or sequestration. Through this process, the Value Group addresses the entire carbon value chain.
The €2 million investment is part of a larger €100 million innovation fund from the City of Rotterdam. The fund finances large sustainability projects that will contribute to Rotterdam’s energy transition and circular economy.
Maarten Lodewijks, Co-founder and Director of the Value Group, commented on the investment: “With Energietransitiefonds Rotterdam [the Rotterdam Energy Transition Fund] as a new shareholder, Value Group gains a strong strategic partner to accelerate the development of our Value Hub in Rotterdam for CO₂ offloading and processing. This partnership not only strengthens the realisation of this Value Hub as a blueprint for future Value Hubs but also drives the ongoing expansion and innovation of our patented Carbon Capture technology.
In addition to this project, a pilot programme in South Holland is utilising captured CO2 to enhance plant photosynthesis. CO2 is released throughout the day in greenhouses as part of a sustainable agricultural solution to encourage plant growth, which showcases the practical application of the Value Groups carbon capture technology.
