Fortescue and CMB.TECH deepen ammonia bet with 12-vessel charter deal

Bulk carrier agreement sees cargo owners beginning to create the demand needed to unlock zero-emission shipping.

Fortescue has agreed to charter up to 12 ammonia-capable Newcastlemax bulk carriers from Belgian shipowner CMB.TECH, in one of the largest commercial commitments yet to ammonia-fuelled deep-sea shipping. The move represents a further signal that cargo owners are beginning to drive the transition to zero-emission vessels.

The agreement covers up to 12, 210,000 dwt vessels operated by CMB.TECH’s dry bulk arm, Bocimar. Up to three ships will be delivered with dual-fuel ammonia engines by the end of 2026, while the remaining nine will be built ammonia-ready, allowing them to be converted once fuel availability and commercial conditions support the transition.

The ships will transport iron ore for Fortescue, extending a relationship between the Australian mining group and Bocimar that stretches back more than two decades. According to the companies, if operated wholly on green ammonia, the fleet could cut around 250,000 tonnes of COâ‚‚ emissions annually compared with conventionally fuelled vessels.

While the announcement centres on a fleet of bulk carriers, its broader significance lies in the changing dynamics of shipping’s decarbonisation. Rather than waiting for fuel producers or regulators to create the conditions for ammonia adoption, major cargo owners are beginning to use long-term charter commitments to stimulate demand for zero-emission vessels.

This marks an important shift in the development of alternative fuel markets. Much of the debate around ammonia has focused on engine technology, safety standards and fuel production. The Fortescue agreement demonstrates that commercial demand for ships is becoming an equally important part of the equation and suggests they believe that their customers will be prepared to pay for a zero- or low-carbon service.

By committing to ammonia-capable tonnage today, cargo owners provide shipowners with the confidence to invest in vessels that may initially operate on conventional fuels, but are designed to transition as green ammonia becomes more widely available.

The deal also reinforces the increasingly integrated approach emerging across maritime decarbonisation. CMB.TECH has invested heavily in ammonia engine development, vessel design and fuel supply partnerships, while Fortescue has positioned itself as both a producer and consumer of green fuels through its wider Real Zero strategy.

Taken together, the agreement illustrates how shipping’s decarbonisation is moving beyond technology demonstration towards the creation of complete commercial ecosystems, linking fuel production, vessel investment and long-term cargo demand.

For the dry bulk sector, the announcement is particularly significant. While much of the early alternative fuel activity has focused on container shipping and energy carriers, bulk shipping has been slower to commit because of the scale of fuel requirements and the absence of clear commercial incentives.

Fortescue’s decision suggests that dynamic may be beginning to change, with cargo owners prepared to use their purchasing power to accelerate investment in zero-emission tonnage rather than waiting for regulation alone to reshape the market.

The agreement also sends a broader signal for ammonia as a marine fuel. Recent announcements have highlighted investments in production facilities, bunkering infrastructure and dedicated ammonia carriers serving emerging energy trades. The Fortescue-CMB.TECH deal demonstrates that demand for ammonia-fuelled vessels is also beginning to emerge from mainstream commodity shipping.

If that trend gathers pace, it could help resolve one of the industry’s longstanding challenges: the need to develop vessel demand, fuel supply and supporting infrastructure simultaneously. By securing future employment for ammonia-capable ships, long-term charter agreements such as this reduce investment risk across the wider value chain.

In that sense, the transaction represents more than another fleet renewal programme. It is a further indication that commercial partnerships, not regulation alone, are becoming one of the principal mechanisms through which maritime decarbonisation projects are moving from ambition to implementation.
