Kongsberg Maritime has signed a memorandum of understanding with PT PAL Indonesia, the country’s largest state-owned shipyard, to cooperate on energy-efficient and lower-emission vessel solutions for the Indonesian market.
The agreement was signed at PT PAL’s headquarters in Surabaya and was attended by representatives from both companies and the Norwegian ambassador to Indonesia, Rut Krüger Giverin. The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration on the integration of energy-efficient and low-emission technologies into newbuildings and retrofit projects for Indonesian vessel owners and operators.
The partnership builds on Kongsberg Maritime’s recent expansion in Indonesia. In July 2025, the company opened offices in Jakarta and Batam to provide local sales, service, spare parts and aftermarket support. According to the company, this expansion was intended to strengthen customer engagement and provide faster technical assistance across the domestic market.
The MoU also aligns with a roadmap developed with Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation during the establishment of Kongsberg Maritime’s local entity. While no specific vessel contracts or technology packages have been announced, the agreement provides a formal structure for cooperation between the technology supplier and the shipyard on future projects.
Kongsberg Maritime’s portfolio includes marine automation, propulsion systems, dynamic positioning, energy management systems, deck handling equipment and vessel design. The agreement with PT PAL is expected to cover the application of these technologies in support of improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions performance across selected vessel types constructed or modernised at the yard.
Wenche Andersen, managing director for APAC Service Management at Kongsberg Maritime, said: ‘Today’s signing marks the beginning of a meaningful partnership with PT PAL, one that supports Indonesia’s maritime ambitions and advances our shared goals for energy efficiency and decarbonisation. With our expanded presence in Indonesia and a strong foundation built alongside national authorities, we are committed to enabling long-term sustainable value for shipowners and the wider maritime community.’
PT PAL builds naval and commercial vessels for domestic and international customers. The shipyard is engaged in fleet renewal and modernisation programmes intended to support Indonesia’s national maritime strategy. Under the MoU, the companies will examine how advanced energy-efficient and low-emission technologies can be incorporated into both new vessels and existing tonnage undergoing upgrade.
Wiyono Komodjojo, chief marketing officer at PT PAL, said: ‘We are very pleased to formalise our collaboration with Kongsberg Maritime through this MoU. As Indonesia accelerates its maritime modernisation and decarbonisation efforts, strong partnerships with global technology leaders are essential.’
While the agreement does not specify financial terms, project timelines or emission reduction targets, its immediate impact is to formalise technical cooperation between the two companies, supported by Kongsberg Maritime’s expanded local service infrastructure and PT PAL’s shipbuilding capacity.
